PANJIM: Against the backdrop of stamp collection currently being developed as a full-fledged Science of Philately, the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (GBSHSE) has directed all the institutions to constitute Philately Club in their schools for the ensuing Academic year 2019-20.
The decision to set up Philately Club was taken following a resolution proposed by environmentalist Dr Nandkumar Kamat, member of the executive council. The resolution was unanimously passed by the council during its meeting held on February 14, 2019, to promote the hobby of postage stamp collection and their scientific studies amongst students as a means of healthy personality development.
In a circular issued to all the heads of the institutions, Secretary Goa Board Bhagirath Shetye said that the hobby of stamp collection can arouse curiosity, develop tendency to analyze subjects, helps to build the good habit of patience and fosters friendship.
“Now a day, collecting stamp has not remained as a hobby but has blossomed into a full-fledged Science of Philately,” the Board said.
The Board has mentioned that there are various branches in the field of Philately; besides collecting stamps like collection of postal stationery, flight covers, exhibition covers, meter franking, revenue and code stamps, stamp paper and postal history. The schools are directed to submit the list of their activities to the Board.
Thematic collection, which has become a boon in philately, based on specific subject like butterflies, flowers, birds, fish, sports, maps, aircrafts, etc, that students have to study for developing your theme/topics.
“When a theme is researched properly, the collector will gain vast amount of background of information, thus thematic collection make one master of that particular subject,” Shetye said.
